Parents are F'ing Up Their Kids

When I think back to my childhood and what TV shows I watched. I find it funny how different things are today…with the ratings, parental controls and people lobbying against shit that really would not make a difference if kids had better parenting.

Overall…I think it is all about the parenting…not what kids see or watch on TV.

When I was a kid, I watched:
Cartoons including; Underdog, The Shmoos, Scooby Doo, The Flinstones, Bugs Bunny Road Runner Hour and Sylvester and Tweety
As well as; the A-Team, Land of the Lost, Eight is Enough, Hawaii Five-O, Hardcastle and McCormick, Beretta, CHIPS, Dukes of Hazard, Planet of the Apes, Starsky and Hutch, etc.

These days…I don’t know that parents (in general) would allow young kids to watch those shows….well, with the exception of Eight is Enough and a few of the cartoons. I saw something years ago that named the Bugs Bunny Road Runner Hour and Sylvester and Tweety two of the most violent shows on TV. WTF?!

I guess I just don’t know why parents are not taking responsibility for their kids…and are just throwing the blame for their fucked up kids on TV and the entertainment industry. My feeling is that a kid (for the most part) can watch whatever …as long as the parents do their job teaching the child right and wrong, respect, and that they can talk with them about anything…the kid will be fine.

We don’t (again…for the most part) sensor anything that the kids watch and if they are watching something that is disturbing to them or that they don’t understand…we are there to openly discuss it with them.

I think that it is the kids that can’t (for whatever reason) talk to their parents and are left home in front of a TV with nobody teaching them about life…or the kids who's parents are so over protective that they can't do shit without mommy hovering and making all of the decisions...those are the ones who end up with the big problems.

PARENTS!!!!!! Schools don’t teach kids respect, honor, right and wrong and morals. They don’t reinforce the ‘family first’ mentality that I think all people should be taught. They don’t teach about peer pressure, gangs, the laws, how to communicate with parents.
THAT IS YOUR JOB!!!!

Stop blaming everyone else for your inability to spend quality time with your kids, communicate with them and teach them what they need to know to have a good life.

I propose we put a ban on sheltering children and fine parents who blame others for their kids fucking up or being complete sissies!

You hit the nail on the head...Oh wait is that to violent..lmao

You are so right. The smothering is ridiculous. Thise kids are taught all of that stuff while they are home from birth until 5 years old. It all starts there!!!

K... I don't blame television or anything... I completely agree that parents have to take responsibility...

But also... sometimes kids do crappy things and become crappy people all on their own... with only them to blame.

But you are right... the parents shouldn't blame other things such as media or whatever... Alot of the time it IS the parents fault...

I was just pondering a blog post about this... I might link to you and use you as a jumping off point, if that's okay? I completely agree. If the parenting is strong it ultimately trumps the entertainment industry entirely.

I agree 100% and I've written several posts myself about basically the same thing. I've seen firsthand how so many parents are raising entitled, spoiled kids; kids who cannot respect their elders or much else. I'm more old school with my kids and I'm rare 'round these parts. Glad to see someone else who is as equally disgusted by "those" parents.

Yeah what you said. I hate when parents make excuses for their kids mistakes. Hello - That means they don't learn from them!

Some of my son's 12 and 13 year old friends have parents who let them watch all the R rated movies they want, with no parental supervision. And guess what - those kids end up re-enacting lines from movies, and saying stuff they don't really understand, and getting all confused about making good choices. My son hates that I severely limit which R movies he watches (and if he sees any, he only watches them with me in the room). But when his friends get in trouble, he sort of understands.

All my kids watch are Scooby Doo, The Flinstones & Smurfs on Boomerang. We roll old school.

But I agree with what you are saying 100%. It's similar to the way EVERY.SINGLE.THING has a medical diagnoses these days. I wish we could just keep things simple again.

Yes, I take responsibility for teaching my kids manners, respect and good sense. Sometimes I have to "unteach" what they have learned from other kids whose parents are WAY too lax in the parenting department. Especially the parents who - every single time - pick up their kids from my kid's parties 2 1/2 hours late!! What the hell?

I whole heartedly agree with you !!

I have some rules about tv. We don't watch any cartoons where the main characters always have 'angry eyebrows' or sitcoms where the kids don't learn a lesson from their mis-doings or the kids' don't respect their parents or adults.

I also watch as much as i can with them...so I can use the 'teaching moments' that are always right there.

...when I'm not blogging of course.

You are absolutely right, I also think back when I was a child we did not have child locks on pantry cupboards, closets etc we just were told not to open it an dwe listened now as parents we take the easy way out (the shortcuts Id like to call it)!!
